WOOD SELECTION AND CUTTING.

The Stoneybrook Clock Company prides itself in being an American company producing American historically influenced clocks, and, built in the United States.  The timbers that are utilized are almost exclusively native to this country and include walnut, walnut burl, cherry and tiger cherry wood, maple and tiger maple wood, oak wood and pine.  Very limited use of plywood occurs where there is no reasonable alternative.  Particle board and synthetic veneers are not utilized.

The process begins with rough sawn timber.  All wood boards are individually selected for clock production and are kiln-dried and indoor air-dried.  Often boards are rested during the cutting process to enable the various pieces of lumber to attain uniform moisture content.  This is an important step necessary to minimize warping, cracking or shrinkage of the wood.

Individual boards are selected which are best suited for crowns, molding, side doors, side panels, wood turnings etc.

ASSEMBLY

Clock cases are almost always constructed by a single individual rather than a production line.  Often the craftsman signs the cases indicating their pride in their craftsmanship.

Clock cases are built one at a time in a carfeul meticulous fashion utilizing tried and true woodworking techniques of the nation's finest furniture craftsman.

FINISHING

Before application of stains, cases and case parts are hand sanded and the stain  application process is achieved by hand application.  Only the finest oil and water-based stains are utilized.  Depending on the application, on ocassion multiple stainings occur before the proper color is achieved.  Often clock case components are stained and sealed before assembly.

After staining seal coats and sandings occur to bring out the beauty of the wood but also to provide a protective finish to the product.  To this end, VARNISH is utilized on almost all of our products.  When varnish is not used a hand rubbed oil finish is applied.

Varnish although far more difficult to apply provides a superior finish which is both durable as well as providing an excellent seal coat.  Varnish is resistant to water, alcohol, acid and heat and requires very little maintenance attention.  This ensures long lasting beauty as well as product longevity.

The use of varnish is a feature not often found in clock products made by other clock manufacturers.  In addition hand rubbed finishes on all sides of the case "inside" and "outside" set our product apart from other manufacturers.
